What may seem like an inconsequential summer chore, lawn mowing is actually critical to your lawn’s health and growth. It’s not only important to mow on a regular basis (about once a week), but to also mow under the right circumstances and with the right technique. The general rule of thumb is to not mow your lawn shorter than 2.5 inches, and to only remove the top ⅓ of the grass’s blade. Don’t cut it too short in effort to mow less—longer grass blades grow better root systems, and will prevent drought in your lawn. Additionally, be sure to mow your lawn when the grass is dry, but not during the hottest time of the day. Mowing when the sun is at least slightly down will put the less stress on your lawn, and allows grass some time to heal out of direct sunlight.
Whether you have a sprinkler system installed or prefer to water your plants and lawn by hand, don’t underestimate the need for adequate hydration. The way in which you water, however, is more important than how frequently you water. Aim to water your plants and lawn early in the morning, before the sun is at its peak. Ideally, your grass should get at least an inch of water each week. Overwatering can deplete your grass and plants of oxygen and make them more susceptible to disease.
Finally, don’t forget to water any flower beds or potted plants on your deck, patio or entryway! It doesn’t hurt to place them in areas where they can get shade during the day, either.
While it’s nice to have beautiful gardens and a lush lawn, you should also be cognisant of your landscape’s health! With the proper landscaping strategy, you can maintain a stunning aesthetic while also preventing weeds and plant disease. One way to do this is to effectively use mulch around plants and new trees. Mulch naturally prevents weed growth, helps conserve moisture in soil and insulates root systems from harsh temperatures.
