Ready to Take Your Tree From Potted to Planted? Learn How to Plant an Outdoor Tree in Your Mid-Missouri Landscape

A few trees can liven up any landscape in the Jefferson City, MO area, whether in small planters or planted in the ground. However, if you’re making the transition from a container tree and planting it in your yard, careful steps must be taken. Continue with mid-Missouri’s most trusted landscaper, Boulder Creek Lawn & Landscape, and we’ll help you plant your container tree properly!
Choose your planting location & determine the proper depth for your container tree
Before you even take your tree out of the container, you need to have your location carefully picked out. Depending on how large the tree will grow and the sunlight conditions it requires, your tree may grow more successfully in one area than another. Knowing how deep to dig is also a major factor–planted trees in mid-Missouri should have their top roots sitting even with the soil line.
Dig a hole in your mid-Missouri lawn & carefully remove the tree from its pot
Once you know how deep the hole should be, take out a shovel and start digging! When preparing the hole for your container tree, make sure the width is at least three times the width of the planter, shaping the ends into gradual slopes instead of sharp cut-offs. To start removing the tree from its pot, lay it on its side, tap the container, and slowly remove the tree while keeping as much soil intact as possible. As you move the tree to the ground, make sure you’re handling it close to the root ball and root collar.
Center your outdoor tree & start filling the landscape with soil
Next, start adjusting the tree until it's straight and centered, with the upper roots matching the ground level. When your tree is even, use a shovel to backfill soil in the gaps and water thoroughly halfway through the process. You can prevent water from running off by building a small ring of soil three feet from the trunk.
Mulch & water your newly planted tree in mid-MO
Now that the container tree is planted in the ground, it's time to begin your tree care in Jefferson City, MO. Apply a layer of mulch around the base of your tree, making sure it is at least two to four inches deep without touching the trunk. The best way to water a planted tree is by soaking the dirt gradually every day for two weeks. For more information about mid-MO tree care, call our landscapers!
