Produce to Plant in Early Spring for Your Mid-Missouri Garden

New gardeners are often led to believe that gardening doesn’t begin until at least April or May. Wrong! There are plenty of vegetables available to plant during the end of winter and early spring phase.

Broccoli: This vitamin-packed veggie is a cool season crop that thrives in temperatures between 60 and 75 degrees. You might want to wait a little bit before planting in the winter though, because one too many cold periods will cause bolting (premature flowering).

Kale: This leafy green does very well in cooler climates. In fact, light frosts can actually improve the taste! Kale has been the latest health-craze for all the best salads and smoothies, and you can start growing it well before the spring!

Lettuce and Spinach: These two grow very similarly and have a high tolerance for temperature. Spinach can grow in temperatures as low as 35 degrees一for lettuce, it’s 45. You can start planting spinach about six weeks before the last frost.

Green beans: Once the risk of frost has passed, green beans can be added to your crop right away! These yummy vegetables grow best in 60-80 degree weather, and enjoy lots of sunlight. Bush beans or pole beans, they are perfect for the spring months.

Plants & Flowers To Consider for Spring Landscaping in Mid-Missouri

Missouri is home to many plants that will look beautiful in your next landscaping project for the spring. Some of these start flowering as early as March, so be on the lookout when talking to your landscaper in the area about spring lawn care.

Celandine Poppy: The celandine poppy is a little yellow flower that blooms from March to May. These delightful flowers are for shady areas in central and southeast Missouri.

Columbine: This red species typically flowers from April to July along the banks of the Ozarks. Columbine is also for shady areas, and additionally, its nectar attracts hummingbirds! If you’re looking for a pop of color in your space, columbine is the way to go.

Little Bluestem: This grassy plant is perfect for landscaping in Missouri. Little bluestem is also great at handling winter weather, so they can be planted super early.

Rusty Blackhaw: These shrub-like plants begin flowering in March and April. Some rusty blackhaws can even grow into the form of a small tree! This would add a delicate touch to any mid-Missouri yard design.

How to Begin Landscaping in the Spring

So, let’s get started! Planning out your garden is the first step in the perfect spring landscape. Think about the placement of each plant, the garden edging, and where you plan to get your landscaping materials in mid-Missouri. Boulder Creek offers many of the foundational items for your garden, such as mulch, topsoil, and gravel! Next, you’ll want to start inspecting the plants and trees and get rid of extra branches or have them removed by a professional landscaper. Now to the fun part: spring planting! After the seeds are properly planted, you’ll move on to fertilizing your lawn. Make sure you’re meeting the requirements of the plants in your area and not just blindly dumping any old fertilizer in.
